Standing Advisory Group on Ethics (SAGE)

The Wellcome Trust has established a Standing Advisory Group on Ethics (SAGE) - a committee of external experts [Word 26KB] - to provide advice on:

  • ethical issues associated with applications for funding that cannot be addressed through the standard procedures of local ethical review, and the Home Office Inspectorate (for animal experiments) or Research Ethics Committee (in the case of studies involving human subjects)
  • Trust policies and the work of the Trust more broadly.

SAGE is not a policy-making body for the Trust, nor does it perform the role of an independent ethical review body or replace Funding Committees' roles and responsibilities in relation to specific research proposals. Please refer to the terms of reference [Word 24KB] for further details.
