Professor Peter Smith CBE, FMedSci

Peter Smith joined the Board of Governors in June 2004.

He is Professor of Tropical Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Between 1999 and July 2004 Professor Smith was Chair of the UK Spongiform Encephalopathy Advisory Committee (SEAC). From 2003 to 2008 he was a council member of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics.

Professor Smith gained a first-class honours degree in Applied Mathematics from City University, from where he also has a DSc in Medical Statistics. His research interests include studies on cancers and tropical diseases, vaccine and other intervention studies against malaria, HIV, tuberculosis, hepatitis and leishmaniasis. He is Chair of the Programme Board for Global Health and Vaccination Research of the Research Council of Norway. Professor Smith was awarded the Donald Reid Medal for distinguished contributions to epidemiology in 2003.
