Guidance for applicants

Advice on applying for a role and preparing for interview.

Applying for a role at the Wellcome Trust

We advertise our vacancies not only on this website - the lists are updated weekly - but also on appropriate external media and websites.

When we advertise each role, we always specify the essential skills, qualities, experience and qualifications the successful candidate will need, and we include information on how to apply and the closing and interview dates.

We would prefer candidates to apply through our online application system. If you are unable to do this, applications can be emailed to HR@wellcome.ac.uk or, as a final option, posted to: HR, Wellcome Trust, Gibbs Building, 215 Euston Road, London NW1 2BE.

Applications should arrive by 17.00 on the closing date.

Interviews

After the closing date, we aim to shortlist candidates as quickly as possible; candidates invited for interview will then be contacted with further details.

We aim to ensure that our buildings are as accessible as possible and that appropriate facilities are provided for all candidates throughout the selection process. Please let us know if you require any special arrangements at any stage of the process.

In general, our selection process will involve one or two stages. Interviews normally involve the line manager for the post and/or Head of Department, and you will also be interviewed by HR. Depending on the nature of the role you may also be asked to complete some other form of assessment or task. Full details of this will be provided in advance.

After the interview, the selection panel will identify the candidate whose application they wish to progress and a member of the HR Department will get in touch. References will then be taken up prior to any formal offer being made. In some cases other checks may be required due to the nature of the role (e.g. Criminal Record Bureau check).

All candidates, including those who are not shortlisted, will be notified of the outcome of their application.

Other hints

When applying for a role it may be useful to:

  • check that you meet the essential requirements for the role in terms of the skills, qualities, experience and qualifications specified
  • review your CV to ensure that it is accurate and up to date and that the experience, skills and qualifications relevant to this role are highlighted clearly
  • check you have made the most of your opportunity to show clearly how you match the criteria and requirements for the role in your covering letter
  • check the details of the application process. In general, we will ask you to submit an up-to-date CV and a covering letter, but in some cases we may ask you to submit other information or details.

When attending an interview you may wish to:

  • read through a copy of your application and refresh your knowledge of the job description and find out more about the organisation
  • consider preparing for possible questions you may be asked - often these are derived from the requirements of the role or you may be asked for examples which demonstrate your experience
  • aim to be as specific as possible and provide clear and concise answers
  • think about any questions you may have about the role or organisation.

We appreciate that applying for a role and attending an interview requires a lot of time and commitment; we hope that you find it a positive experience. We do review our processes and practices on a regular basis, and if you have any feedback we would be happy to receive this: HR@wellcome.ac.uk.
