Developing our people

Your development
We continue to be inspired by the curiosity of Henry Wellcome - his voracious appetite to develop new ways of thinking and to expand his own knowledge and expertise. Today, the people we support are constantly striving to achieve advances in human and animal health and we are passionate about supporting them to do so.
The best learning happens every day. Opportunities to learn in such a diverse organisation are all around you at the Wellcome Trust. We want people who join us to have a huge curiosity and an appetite to learn and try things they never thought to do before.
During your comprehensive induction we introduce you to the eclectic mix that is the Trust. No matter which area of the Trust you join, we want you to know the complete picture of how the Trust works, your role and how you contribute to achieving our vision. Most importantly, we will also ensure you know where to look for help and support as you settle in.
We believe there are some things we all need to be good at, our core skills and behaviours, and some things that are more specific to our unique jobs, careers and aspirations. You can expect to set a development plan each year with your manager. This will involve stepping back from the day-to-day activities to work on the areas you can improve on, in order to be even better at what you do. And of course, we also help you find the right development opportunities to achieve your goals.
Developing our people: secondments
Running time: 7 min 5 s.
We encourage our people to look beyond the experiences and practices of our own organisation. Work shadowing, placements and secondments provide employees opportunities to learn from others in different environments and are very much encouraged to help staff to develop and learn. In this slideshow, hear from a member of our Investments team, reflecting on a recent secondment in Australia.
