Parliamentary briefings

Key areas covered in the Human Fertilisation and Embryology (HFE) Bill that are supported by the Trust are as follows:

  • 'human admixed embryos' previously known as 'interspecies embryos’
  • extension of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) powers and clarification of the licensing and appeal process
  • removal of the prohibition on altering the genetic structure of embryos for research
  • extension of storage limits
  • extension of research purposes for which licences can be granted
  • facilitation of the use of data on treatment held by the HFEA for medical research.

The Trust also supports further amendments to the HFE Bill in the following areas:

  • consent to use existing collections of cell lines to create embryos to generate embryonic stem cells
  • consent to use children's tissue to create embryos for research.
